Journey of Isla del Sol, Bolivia: Birthplace of the Inca dynasty

Isla del Sol on the Bolivian side of Lake Titicaca is known as the birthplace of the Incan dynasty. For me it was a haven of beautiful landscapes with people and customs that have not changed in centuries. Jon and I took a boat in the morning to the north side of the island and then spent the day visiting ruins, picnicking and hiking 9.5 km to the south side. The hike went through the middle of the island high up giving us outstanding views of the lake from both sides. We were delighted when we got to our hotel late afternoon to find that our views would continue into our room.

Time stands still on this island and I was grateful to share in a piece of it for a brief second.

Views from the hike across the island.

What we ate, there is a restaurant in the southern part of town called Las Velas (candles) which is run entirely without electricity, the tables only lit by candlelight. Everything on the menu is made from scratch in either a propane oven or gas burner once you order just like a home cooked meal. The meals this woman could make from such little equipment using just a headlamp for lighting was amazing. Jon and I placed our order and sat outside watching the sunset while the owner got busy prepping our meal. We enjoyed our meal so much we ordered a pizza for desert.

View of our favorite and most unique restaurant so far and my meal.

Where we stayed, Hostel Inti Wayra, a family run hotel on a hill high above the lake. We had a private room with 180 degree views of the lake and a bathroom for $35 a night including a yummy breakfast. Water was only slightly above cold and not quite lukewarm but the outstanding views and the serenity of the island was well worth it.
