Journey of Zug, Switzerland: The Barnhouse Workaway

Our train pulled out of the Zurich station skirting the lake and dropped us off in a picturesque farm town. Although the town was only 20 minutes from Zurich and 30 minutes from Lucerne we felt a million miles away. Our next journey was leading us to another workaway, this time to an old timber-frame barn house in the picturesque Switzerland countryside. Zug is a typical Swiss farm town with historical properties, cows grazing rolling green hills and generations of locals who trod the same path as their ancestors on their Sunday walks.

Our host Markus, fell in love with the property and has been using workawayer’s to help restore the Barnhouse. His love for the Barnhouse is only rivaled by the atmosphere and International presence workawayer’s have brought to his home. During the week Jon and I were there we were fortunate to share our time with other workawayer’s from Italy, Brazil, Albania, and Iran. A jovial atmosphere with family dinners, Saturday fieldtrips, and campfires made each of us fall in love with the Barnhouse as well.

As everyone packed up and left to work offsite during the day I remained in the serene setting getting a small glimpse of what it would be like to live in the country. My mornings were spent with a dozen clucking hens and my afternoons quietly reading in a warm nook with my body leaning against an ancient ceramic heater. My friends were the cows next door that followed me as I trotted down the path to the where I deposited my Fr. 3 for fresh milk.

After spending a week in the country-side of Switzerland one thing was certain, Jon and I were ready to go home and start working on our future dreams, wherever and whatever those may be. There was just one more thing I had to do
