Annecy is a modern town with a historical center on Lac d’Annecy, with views of the mountains, flowery lanes and romantic canals. The old town is split in two by the canal like Thiou River which just adds to the charm. Jon and I had one night here before our bus to Switzerland and we wanted to make the most of it. Lucky for us it was a beautiful sunny day but I would imagine this town also looks magical dusted with snow and filled with Christmas markets.
Annecy was made for strolling s much of the city is traffic-free. The Tourist Information (TI) has details for several walks in the area, including historical walks, lakeside ambles and workout worthy full day hikes to Roc de Chere. If you have more time you can take the bus or drive to Le Semnoz with easy mountain walks, cafes and views of Mont Blanc. If biking is your thing hop on one of the many lakeside trails. With limited time Jon and I strolled leisurely through the old town hand in hand marveling at the buildings and canals.

As it was a little too cold for a swim and we did not have the stamina to rent a paddleboat we decided to tour the lake by boat with Compagnie des Bateaux du Lac d’Annecy. The hour-long cruise was relaxing and gave commentary on the surrounding area in English. There is also a two-hour tour that stops at several locations along the lake allowing visitors to stop at several villages.

Beautiful Lake Annecy.
In Europe, the aperitif is a time honored tradition of relaxing before dinner with a regionally based cocktail. The aperitif is meant to open the meal and build up one’s appetite and it’s one of my favorite ways to join the locals in Europe. On this occasion, I opted for a Lavender Kir which was white wine with a lavender liquor. In this case my drink, with its pale lavender color, certainly looked better than it tasted.
Beautiful lavender Kir.
Where we stayed, Adonis Annecy – Icone Hotel, for approximately $60 a night. The hotel was in the heart of Annecy and a short walk from the Bus/Train station. Our room was modern with a view over the pedestrian old town streets.
