We are proud to introduce Woomera, our new home for the next three weeks as we travel up the East Coast of Australia. She may look like a simple mini-van from the outside but inside she is a backpacker’s dream. The entire back converted into a bed at night and under the bed was storage and a cabinet for kitchen items and our one burner propane stove as well as a mini fridge. With her 445,000 existing kilometers, we knew that she had carried many others before on adventures and we were in good hands.
Views of the bed, Jon cooking on our stove and Jon with watermelon and champagne for our first night in our new home all taken at Evans Lookout in the Blue Mountains. Living out of a minivan is not cheap. It cost us $72 a day for rental and insurance with more exclusions than inclusions.
Not knowing how we would enjoy living out of a minivan we tested our first few days out by staying close to Sydney and visiting the Blue Mountains and Hunter Valley. The Blue Mountains has a mini Grand Canyon which is surrounded by a forest of Eucalyptus trees. We drove to scenic bypasses and did a little hiking and slept at a free state run campground with drop toilets but no shower.

The next stop was Hunter Valley which we did in a little more style. We rented a spot at a caravan park with a newly built kitchen equipped with a barbie and even a pool. We spent the entire day wine, beer, vodka, chocolate, salumi and cheese tasting. My idea of heaven!
