Jon and I stopped in Nasca for the night for the sole purpose of catching a glimpse of those famed lines our schoolteachers taught us about. When we arrived in the afternoon to our hotel we arranged a flight for the next day at 10:00 with a tour to see the lines up close the following afternoon. All we knew is that the plane would have 6 seats or less. That night we went to the Maria Reiche Planetarium where we learned all about how this amazing women spent her entire life (literally) researching and protecting the lines.
The next morning we received a knock on the door around 8:00 from the owner who asked us if we could be ready in 15 as they changed our flight. We were ushered into a taxi who took us to the airport and rushed us through the formalities and past other waiting passengers out to the runway. To our surprise we were walked over to our own personal two-seater plane. The process was so quick that I did not even have time to get nervous before we were up in the air and staring in awe at the surrounding landscapes and mysterious lines. It was definitely our 15-minutes of pretend fame!

The viewing platform as seen from the airplane. In the middle you can see the Pan-American highway going directly through the middle of the lizard. The highway was constructed before the importance of the lines were discovered.

What we ate, Peru is known for their pollo roaster restaurants which is basically rotisserie chicken with spices and served with different sauces. In Nasca, we went to Polleria Rico Pollo where we ate the most scrumptious roasted chicken with the locals and washed it down with chica morado. I actually ate the majority of the chicken as poor Jon had the traveler’s sickness for the third time!
Where we stayed, Hostal Buen Pastor, a small family run hotel close to the center. We had a private room with a bathroom for about $20 a night not including breakfast. They spoke excellent English and arranged all of our tours and transportation for us, even picking us up from the bus station for free.
