Journey of Lima, Peru: Chicken hearts and pisco

Lima is a city of unique architecture, museums, and fantastic food all set in interesting neighborhoods. We, well mostly I, spent time checking out the neighborhoods, visiting several museums, and doing tours of the city. Jon joined me for some of it but as he put it we were spending 24-hours a day together, and then repeated the 24, so I figured it was time I ventured out on my own. I highly recommend the Lima Free Walking Tour which started with a beer tasting and ended with pisco tasting. Can’t beat that!

From top left: first tasting of coffee beer before our walking tour, main plaza of Lima – check out the cool balconies on the buildings, changing of guards at the palace where Jon stated it was the most unmanly thing he has even seen due to the fact the men kick their legs pretty high, and Jon pisco tasting.

Barranco’s “bridge of sighs” and view of the city built high above the beach.

The restaurant and garden at the fantastic Museo Rafael Larco as well as some interesting X-rated ceramics, adult eyes only please. Ladies, if you are having a bad day just think you could be that lady in the last picture.

What we ate; we were invited to a family BBQ through one of Justyne’s co-workers and I am so bummed I have no pictures of the food as it was the best meal we have had. They passed each dish one at a time so we ate small portions slowly all night starting with fresh tomatoes and creamy avocado, then from the grill; stuffed mushrooms, marinated mushrooms, asparagus, outstanding chicken wings, chorizo, chicken breasts, pork and steak, all served with 2 different spicy sauces. We even tried our first grilled corazon de pollo (chicken hearts)! They were actually pretty good and had a consistency similar to calamari. Best part was being in a social setting with wonderful people. Even Jon relaxed a little and enjoyed some potent pisco, which he spent the whole next day recovering from.

Where we stayed, Open Guest House, a small B&B in the Miraflores district of Lima directly. We had he a basic private room with a shared bathroom for about $36 a night including breakfast. It was located in a quiet neighborhood of the city within a 10-minute walk to the beach, restaurants, metro, etc. The owner spoke English and was extremely helpful in getting around and restaurant recommendations. There was nice outdoor space and a living room which Jon made good use of watching his movies.
